This MIDI board, The MSM-1, is still avaialble as a repair part from H & K but at a cost of over $250. The pots are now like new, smooth and no scratches or discontinuities.Īt the time that the Tubeman Plus was released by Hughes & Kettner in 1992, there was an option board available to allow MIDI capability for the TubeMan Plus. Then each pot was disassembled and flushed with a non-silicone electronic contact cleaner and subsequently sprayed with a protective coating of DeoxiT D100 before reassembly and re-soldering on the PCB. The 2 gain, 4 EQ and 3 Master Gain pots were individually unsoldered from the Tubeman Plus PCB. Since proper cleaning was not possible while the pots are mounted on the PCB the following was performed. Most of the control pots were scratchy so cleaning was required. Here is a list of the mods performed on this preamplifier to increase it's functionality. just a filler panel on the rear of the chassis.

This particular unit had a few problems when I received it. This preamplifier uses a single 12AX7A preamp tube. The is a shared gain for Clean/ Crunch and a separate gain for the Lead channel which also has a switch to revoice the preamp for a LEAD 2 sound. It is a 3 channel amplifier with independant Master Volume controls for each channel and shared EQ controls. The H&K Tubeman Plus Rack Preamp (circa 1993) is a tube guitar preamplifier with optional MIDI controlability.
